В This project has patiently sat by the wayside while I settle into my new digs at UDEL. Mary Smull and I will be collaboratingВ  during the summer of 09 and you will find us foraging philly’s urban green spaces and vacant lots for medicinal herbs and natural dye stuff!

The fields are overflowing with weeds because of the recent rain, oncologist this week I am going to set up a little natural dye lab in the studio and at my research site (13th and Washington Ave.)

Primarily, I am interested in making small samples–similar to the sample book above. The “residue” imparted from the dye plant is specific to this point and time as dye colors extracted from plants vary from place to place, dye lots vary season to season dependent upon conditions under which the plant was grown, on mineral content in water used in the dye bath.

The plant imparts color in combination with a mordant solution. I will be using home made copper and iron liquors made local water sources (one batch from each local source) in hopes of seeing some variation. As you may be gathering this project is open ended and could travel.

The title of Gabriel Plattes 1792 book published in Philadelphia: A discovery of subterranean treasure,viz all manner of mines and minerals…also a sure way to try what color any berry,leaf, flower,stalk,root,seed,bark or wood will give together with directions for making colours that shall not stain or fade.

I had a blast this summer in the studio experimenting with oxidizing fabric, prescription
painting with dyes of fabric and exploring resist methods like potato dextrin with fiber reactive dyes. Oh, and a little sideways exploration of mask making–which I really enjoyed! Check out my process blog: www.romeoandjulietinclarkpark.blogspot.com.

Philadelphia Sewing Collective is a community organization connecting those interested in sewing and clothing to resources and opportunities. Since 2006 a core team of collective teachers have offered courses on sewing and held sewing circles, this web
workshops, ed lectures and tours.

The collective meets at individual homes, this site
bars and cafes and community centers during events that range from UFO (unfinished project) workshops, sewing 101 classes, pattern making and specific garment construction projects as well as networking and community building.

Most recently, “Philly Swap 2010″ pulled in 400 people to swap, workshop and network at URBN headquarters as part of Design Philadelphia.
